We turned up to this house we were going to buy to find it Demolished

So we were going to buy this house in Baton Rouge. The seller had inherited it and she did let us know it was in very bad shape. We buy houses in any condition so aren’t put off by a big project so we agreed to buy it based on the information we got over the phone. We went to meet her at the property so we could get the key to get our contractors through and plan our rehab and it turned out that the house wasn’t there! We ended up finding out that the city had demolished it 🤦‍♂️.

The owner had inherited the property and while she did have a judgement of possession the city had her late mothers address on file so never got notification. I wish we could say this is the first time we have turned up to what an owner thought was a house to find a lot but it actually isn’t. We have had a couple of out of state owners that had the same experience. We buy lots but would much prefer to buy the house before its demolished so we can salvage it.

You can set the video our Founder Aussie Steve made when we turned up at the property or you can read the transcript below.

“Hey guys, it’s Aussie Steve here from Home By Louisiana. We buy houses in any condition in Louisiana. I’m here at a house I thought we were buying in Baton Rouge. So I say ‘thought’ because I thought it was a house. And I don’t know if you can see, but I’m actually standing in a lot.

So, it was an inherited house, it was meant to be in really bad shape, which we knew. So we spoke to the heir and we came here to get the key to look at the house. We’re driving around trying to locate the property, we had some trouble. And then I spoke to the niece, she got here, and it turns out that the city tore the house down.

So it’s not the first time it’s happened to me. I’ve seen houses being torn down that people out of state didn’t know about. So, you know, just another interesting real estate story. And another wrinkle is, I didn’t realize the house behind it, we actually bought that house too. So I actually recognized the house, didn’t realize it was so close. We bought it and we sold it to another landlord who owns it now.

So, we’ve been here, yeah. We probably saw the house when it was here, I think it was about a year and a bit ago. So we probably saw the house. Um, we should have bought it then. So yeah, look,  I had to go back and think about that now. I thought we had a house and now we have a lot. So, I need to go and ponder that. But these things happen.”
